The short answer: it helps, but it isn't essential. Here's why cars and dogging go hand in hand, and how non-drivers can still take part.
Why The Car Matters
Dogging grew up around the parked car, and there are good reasons it's still at the centre of most meets:
- Privacy and control. A car is a private space you can open or close at will. Lights and windows double as signals.
- Comfort. It's warm, dry and somewhere to sit, which matters on a British night.
- Safety. You can leave whenever you want, quickly and without explanation.
- Getting there. The quiet, out-of-the-way places doggers prefer are rarely on a bus route.
If You Don't Drive
Plenty of people enjoy dogging without a car of their own:
- Join a couple who drive. Many couples are happy to meet a single who arrives on foot, or to collect them from an agreed point, once they've chatted and feel comfortable.
- Watch. Watchers often arrive on foot. Just remember the etiquette: keep a respectful distance and wait for signals.
- Arrange it in advance. Chatting on Dogging Finder first means you can sort out the logistics before the night.
However you get there, make sure someone you trust knows where you are, and that you have a safe way home. See our safety tips.
Choosing Where To Park
Pick somewhere genuinely discreet and away from homes, footpaths and public facilities. Park legally, respect closing times and private land, and leave nothing behind. Our guide to the law explains why that matters.
